Chapter Eighteen
ROY STOOD AT THE TANK glass gazing in at the panther goddess.
She had a wry look in her eye.
She’d done something to Halcyon. Toxy came walking forward on her spider legs. Tails, on the other hand, sat at a workstation to the side of the main terminal. The fox girl was typing fast, churning through data and trying to figure out what had gone wrong. Her logical mind was completely engaged.
Roy was feeling far more emotional—he was laughing at the irony of the situation. Here he was, creating women, but just as in real life, women had a way of complicating every little thing.
Tails growled, “So many errors in the printing log. So many issues.”
Toxy laughed before purring, “Well, darling, machines aren’t my forte, but shouldn’t this all work better?”
Roy shook his head. “No. This is software and design. There are always issues. Part of the fun is troubleshooting. I paid a lot of people a lot of money to work through problems. In the end, support teams will always have job security.” He regarded the goddess.
The Josepheline-3 stood watching Toxy carefully, not saying a word.
“Where’s Halcyon?” Roy asked.
The panther shrugged, not taking her eyes off the queen. “Like I said. We disagreed. About who I am. About who I want to fuck. About how much shit I’ll take.”
And the spider queen was silent as well. The two were having some sort of strange staring contest.
Roy watched the two dungeon bosses, two powerful forces sizing each other up.
“Halcyon is still with us,” Tails said suddenly. “The panther woman deleted her, but I found a restore point.”
“How is that possible?” Roy asked.
Tails didn’t have a good answer. “This is the first I ever tried to create a monster girl. So, yeah, I wish I could tell you. I’m thinking while Hal was trying to make changes in the buffer, Otorongo was just aware enough to fight back.”
“Otorongo?” Roy asked.
Tails squinted. “Uh, yeah, that’s the word for jaguar in an ancient Earth language. Incan, I believe.”
“And incorrect,” the panther woman said. “I am the panther goddess of the Otorongo jungle temple. Currently, I don’t have a name. I’ll need to find one.”
Tails laughed. “She’s going to be real fun at parties. Let’s invite Joey over. She can try to delete us. Or maybe murder would be more fun.”
“Joey?” Roy smirked.
“Joey. As in Josepheline-3.” Tails was clever. “If Hal were around, she would make a Joey Lauren Adams reference from the 1990s.”
“Joey is tolerable for now,” the goddess said.
Toxy’s eyes were all open and fixed on the panther. “We should kill this one, darling. We should end her before she ends us.”
“Come in and try,” the newly named Joey said.
Roy liked the strength of the panther goddess, and he liked that she had a killer’s instinct. In the end, he could use someone like her, as long as she would join them.
The speaker came alive with a long gasp. Then Halcyon was back. She sounded frightened. “It wasn’t my fault. I tried. I’m not lying.
